Anthology of Published Papers on Roadmap Theory and Applications

Overview

In addition to the guideline materials developed within the IEEE Industry Relations Committee (IRC) describing roadmap projects and creation strategies, there exists a broad collection of valuable external documents.

Due to the large volume of available references, only a curated selection is included on the IRC website. Below, you will find a useful anthology of websites and highlighted citations. This page will be updated regularly as new, relevant sources are discovered.

Characterisation of technology roadmaps: purpose and format

Characterisation of technology roadmaps: purpose and format, IEEE Conference Publication, IEEE Xplore

Abstract:
Technology roadmapping is an approach that supports the integration of technological considerations into product and business planning. The method has been widely adopted by industry, although its implementation can represent a challenge to managers in terms of initiating the process, and then keeping it ‘alive’. This paper describes a ‘fast-start’ technology roadmapping process that has been developed to address these industrial needs. Development and testing of the method in a wide range of situations, combined with a review of other published technology roadmaps, has enabled a classification system for roadmaps to be constructed, based on both their purpose and format.

The progress of the strategic technology roadmap of METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan): Practical business cases and sustainable manufacturing perspective

Abstract: The Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (hereafter, METI) has formulated and revised the Strategic Technology Roadmap (hereafter, the STR) to provide the up-to-date national infrastructure for strategic R&D management. Both the STR and the METI’s technology roadmapping effectiveness have been widely valued in R&D society. In addition, Japan could be a world leading country on eco-innovation, because of its historical experience on environment and energy-saving. METI developed a new area of sustainable manufacturing technology in the STR and will present it to the global basis.

How Big Data Has Changed Technology Roadmapping: A Review on Data-Driven Roadmapping

Abstract: With the rise of data mining and predictive technologies, systematic data analytics has become popular in business practices. As data analysis can contribute to technology planning in various ways, previous studies have attempted to integrate data analysis and technology planning tools. This is also the case for the technology roadmap, which is a prominent and promising technology-planning tool.

In recent years, technological advances have motivated industries, companies and even governments to look for an improved alignment between strategic objectives and technology management, preferably through the application of structured and flexible approaches that use techniques such as technology roadmapping. This paper presents the outcomes of a systematic review of the literature relating to technology roadmapping that was published between 1997 and 2011. A hybrid methodological approach that combines bibliometrics, content analysis and semantic analysis was applied. The results show that the main academic journals that discuss this theme are “Technology Forecasting and Social Change” and “Research-Technology Management”. Although the first paper relating to this theme was published in 1997, the number of publications on the subject only began to increase substantially in 2004. Most of the studies reviewed in this paper applied qualitative research methods, indicating that most of the research on the theme is still in an exploratory phase. The interface between roadmapping and other initiatives considered vital to innovation, including knowledge management, communication skills and strategic resources and competencies, are also poorly addressed in the reviewed literature.

Fundamentals of Technology Roadmapping

Garcia and Bray (April 1997)

Sandia National Labs (SAND97-0665)

Abstract: This report focuses on formalizing the process so that it can be more broadly and easily used. As a DOE national security laboratory with R&D as a major product, Sandia must do effective technology planning to identify and develop the technologies required to meet its national security mission. The main benefit of (technology roadmapping is that it provides information to make better technology investment decisions by identifying critical technologies and technology gaps and identifying ways to leverage R&D investments.

The PICMET conference frequently contains presentations on applications of Technology Roadmaps:

PICMET (Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology) was established to disseminate information on technology management through an international conference.

PICMET’s focus is on bringing together the experts on technology management to address the issues involved in managing current and emerging technologies so that the society will be the winner in this changing world.
